April 2008
Dear Friends of District 163,
After noting news of our schools’ academic achievements in my winter
letter for this Web site, I said that I looked forward to continuing
achievement and the announcement of many more milestones. Indeed, that is
the case with this spring letter. The Illinois State Board of
Education recognized Mohawk Intermediate Center, Blackhawk Intermediate
Center, and Beacon Hill Primary Center as 2007 Spotlight Schools and
cited Forest Trail Middle School with a 2007 Academic Improvement Award
for its significant improvement over the last two years. This is the
third consecutive year that Mohawk has received the Spotlight award and
the second consecutive year that Blackhawk and Beacon Hill have received
the award.
A number of schools receive
the Spotlight School award, but it is not as common to receive the
recognition in subsequent years. Each of our schools that administered
the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) for more than one year has
been cited by the state for their academic success. Once again, I credit
the Board, administrators, teachers and parents with this achievement. We
have worked together to provide the programs and atmosphere that support
a strong educational system for our students.
Additionally,
Dr. Anne Bryant, the president of the National Association of School
Boards, highlighted District 163 during her keynote speech at the recent
Rally for Public Education in Lomard sponsored by the Illinois Association
of School Boards (IASB). Dr. Bryant's speech focused on No Child Left
Behind legislation and its effects throughout the United States. She
noted District 163 as one of four school districts in Illinois that have
made remarkable progress and attained goals. The NASB president commented
on District 163 students' achievement at all grade levels in all schools
and she remarked about the wonderful work of the Board of Education and
how well its members work together. The teamwork, collaboration, the high
expectations of the students and the wonderful achievements of the staff
were highlighted.
I am aware that it is the
staff members of District 163 who make the District shine. The staff works
very hard with the students, meets challenges, and communicates to the
students that the Board and administration believe they are capable of
achieving very high standards. Our staff members motivate the students to
achieve and to deliver wonderful instruction.
I am also aware that the
strong support of our Board and parents makes these accomplishments
possible. I thank all of our stakeholders for their commitment to
District 163 and its children.
Sincerely,
Joyce Carmine
Superintendent of Schools
