February 2nd: In honor of Black History Month, today we recognize James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938), John Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954), and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" is a poem written in the late 1890s by activist and scholar James W. Johnson and set to music by his brother John R. Johnson. In 1919, "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" because the official song of the NAACP - an organization that strives to make life better for Black people - and is unofficially known as the Black national anthem. February 1st: In honor of Black History Month, today we recognize James Baldwin (1924-1987). James Baldwin was brilliant. He was a child preacher, novelist, poet, philosopher, and a son of Harlem who thought Black people should be included in America's promise of liberty and justice for all. Families: Mohawk's toy giveaway will be taking place tomorrow (Tuesday, December 21st) from 1:30-2:30 PM. Every student at Mohawk will be taking home a wrapped gift for the holiday. *If your child is absent from school tomorrow, he/she will receive a wrapped gift in January.*
